Crafting With Buckeyes

About Our Buckeyes

Our buckeyes are cleaned and dried, no acrylic applied. Buckeye nuts are natural products and will vary in size and color.

Warning: Buckeye nuts are toxic to humans and animals:
Keep from pets and children. Do not eat!

How Buckeyes Grow

Buckeye nuts grow on large slow-growing trees that provide important shade and nesting habitats for birds and squirrels, as well as show off beautiful color in the autumn. As the nuts grow and mature throughout the summer, they are hidden inside large, fleshy, spiny husks.

Once the nuts fall to the ground, the husks are easy to split open, revealing the shiny brown buckeye. Unlike most tree nuts, buckeyes are toxic and should not be eaten. Even squirrels are smart enough to leave them alone. Buckeye nuts are a natural product and vary in size, shape and color.

Preserving Buckeye Nuts

As with any natural plant material, buckeye nuts deteriorate and decay with time. However, you can easily prolong the life of your shiny buckeyes by drying them in a dehydrator or your oven on the lowest temperature for a few hours. Buckeyes from Harbacheck Harvest are pre-dried for you.

Crafty Buckeye Ideas

Here are some ideas for displaying and enjoying your buckeyes.

  • To keep your buckeyes shiny longer, lightly spray the nuts with a matte or glossy acrylic sealant.
  • Longer lasting than many natural items, a mason jar or wicker basket filled with shiny buckeyes and embellished with twine or ribbon add a dash of rustic charm to your home decorations.
  • Create your own buckeye jewelry with one or more buckeyes and some twine or string.
